Types of Bets in Roulette
Roulette is a casino game in which players bet on a series of numbers. The winning number is determined when a ball placed on the table bounces around the wheel and settles into a pocket marked with that number.
The game of roulette has been popular for centuries. It is believed to have originated in 17th century France and was derived from several other games including Roly Poly and Even Odd, and Biribi, an Italian game which involved putting numbered tickets in a bag and deciding which ones would be pulled out.
There are several different types of bets available on the roulette table, and each one is a unique chance to win money. There are also various rules to follow, so you need to know what to look for before playing.
Street Bet: A street bet, or a trois, is a bet on three numbers. This bet is made by placing a chip on the outside border of any row of three numbers on the layout. The payout is 11-1.
Split Bet: The split bet is a bet that involves placing a chip to straddle the line between two numbers on the layout. This bet is also called a cheval in French, and the payout is 17-1 if you win.
Line Bet: The line bet is similar to the street bet, except you place your chip(s) on the outside border of two rows. This bet is referred to as a sixain in French.
High or Low: This bet, or passe et manque in French, is a bet that the ball will land on any of the first 18 numbers on the layout (1-18) or the last 18 (19-36). The house gets its edge in this bet because it has a 0 and a 00 on the wheel.
There are several variations of the game, including European and American versions. While most online roulette games have the same rules and payouts, they can differ in a few key ways. For example, some have a different set of betting limits and others allow players to bet on the ball instead of the numbers.
